I've gotten plenty of sunburns and learned some good first aid. Here are sunburn treatments, including pain relief, skin care and burn healing tips. First, avoid burns by using sunscreen, but choose the correct SPF (sun protection factor) level.
For older children and adults, I don't recommend using anything higher than SPF 30 (if your skin has not been in the sun much or is fair) and SPF 15 if you have a little tan. Near water and sand, which are both reflective, you may need stronger SPF. Don't be fooled into thinking you won't burn on cloudy days. And re-apply sunscreen after swimming. Sport sunscreens are stickier and last longer but I don't like them as they clog pores. Don't forget to cover lips, ears and scalp or part. Those burn easily. But don't get sunscreen-dependent.
