Toxic crabs: Killer neurotoxin domoic acid in California rock, Dungeness crabs | Examiner.com

Do not eat California rock crabs and Dungeness crabs until further notice. These toxic crabs show high levels of the killer neurotoxin domoic acid. SFGate reported on Nov. 4 that the California Department of Public Health issued this dramatic warning. The announcement of toxic crabs discovered along much of the California coastline came just days before the start of recreational crabbing season. That season may be delayed indefinitely now that the popular Dungeness crabs and rock crabs yielded dangerous domoic acid content. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment recommended halting the Dungeness crabbing until the nature and extent of the neurotoxin poisoning could be assessed. The department called for closure of the rock crabs fishery as well.Toxic crabs: Killer neurotoxin domoic acid in California rock, Dungeness crabs | Examiner.com
