Sleep Apnea Myths Can Kill

I was diagnosed with OSA--Obstructive Sleep Apnea-- in 2010. I began using a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) breathing machine. It's helped me rest and has quite possibly saved my life. I've always had sleep problems. Now that I know why, I've researched apnea. I've found a lot of misinformation circulated by those who don't have it. Some myths are mean stereotyping. Others could kill. Dangerous Myths About Obstructive Sleep Apnea

How I Am Trying to Break My Habit of Staying Up too Late

I have been staying up too late at night and having trouble getting up in the morning. My husband works nights and I miss him. After the kids go to bed I read or watch TV or play on Facebook, way too late. Here's how I'm breaking that habit.

* One thing at a time. I've been working on breaking other bad habits--overspending, overeating, depression, anger. I can only deal with one major issue at a time, can only deal with one bad habit at a time. We got $22,000 in debt and I got that paid off in 2010. I had some health issues that I've found some treatment for--cholesterol, arthritis, pre-diabetes, sleep apnea. I was able to lose 88 pounds--only 12 left to goal weight. So now I can turn my attention to staying up late.  How I Am Breaking Bad Stay Up Late Habit

Health Problems I Lost After Losing Weight

I've lost 71 pounds gained. I didn't crash-diet. I cut fat, transfat, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, starch and meat. Happily, losing weight lost health problems too.

High LDL Cholesterol: My low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol wasn't dangerously high, but it was getting there. Losing just 20 pounds got it down. I hadn't even started seriously dieting yet. What worked was cutting transfat and hydrogenated fat, eating less fat overall and switching to olive oil for cooking. Taking Omega-3 helps. I changed to light olive oil margarine and mayonnaise, nonfat milk and yogurt. I cut dairy, spreads and fat-based condiments. 90 percent of my protein intake is fish, chicken breast and lamb. I rarely eat beef or pork.
